(WMC-TV) - Some bright lights on a vehicle can lead to all sorts of problems, and that's why state troopers say its up to the driver to be aware and responsible.
Next time you're on the road and see blue tinted headlights shining at you, they may be illegal.
Lt. Gregory Obie, with the Tennessee Highway Patrol, said while the lights are not a major concern, it's important for drivers to beware.
That's because it is illegal to have blue lights on your vehicle if they shine forward.
"If the lights are blinding or not aimed right, we just treat it like any other violation," said Obie.
Lt. Obie says factory approved blue tinted, like approved high intensity discharge or HID, headlights are okay.
However, Lt. Obie warns that some H-I-D light bulbs are for off-road use only.
"The big round headlights on top of the S-U-V's and pickup trucks. These lights of you get on the public highway with these kinds of lights we will take some kind of enforcement action," said Obie.
According to state law, glaring or dazzling headlights are forbidden.
To avoid this, vehicle owners are urged to use headlights approved by car manufacturers
And anti-glare devices approved by the TN Department of Transportation.
"A lot of times you go to the aftermarket places and get those lights that shine a lot brighter and if you don't talk to the right salesman you might get an off road light and use it as a road light and that's where the problem comes in at," said Obie.
Lt. Obie said sometimes drivers with specialized lights can be mistaken for emergency workers.
