MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Family and friends of a Tennessee State University student are dealing with a major loss this morning.

William Wayne Jones III., 19, of Smyrna, Tenn. passed out around 4 p.m. Wednesday during a football practice. He later died at a Nashville hospital.

According to The Tennessean, Rod Reed, TSU coach, said Jones was participating in a non-contact practice when he collapsed. Reed said the players had on helmets, but they were not wearing full gear.

According to the newspaper, Reed said Jones caught a football, and was returning it to a coach when he collapsed on the field. The coach said he was not aware of any pre-existing conditions.

Teresa Phillips, The University's Athletic Director, released the following statement:

"Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this very difficult time. Our University and our football team are hurting as we feel the loss of one of our own. As a team and a family we will grieve alongside the family and do everything we can to help support the family through this very difficult time."

The team is set to play again on November 17.
