GERMANTOWN, TN -

(WMC-TV) – It was a ruse many people would fall for.

A man posing as a marine, the kind of person people would want to help.

One man even drove the suspect to two different ATM's.

"You just want to trust them," said Germantown resident Shea Bergfeld.  "You want to trust them especially ones serving our country," she added.

That was the ruse Germantown police say a man used at a Germantown Chik-Fil-A to con a man out of more than $500.  The suspect approached the victim inside the restaurant.

Germantown police say the suspect showed the victim a business card identifying him as a U.S. Marine. He said he needed help unlocking his car because he locked his wallet inside.

The victim drove the man to an ATM, and withdrew some money and gave it to the suspect.  The suspect promised to pay the victim back when he got his car unlocked.

Then the suspect called someone and said it was going to cost more money than he thought, so the victim drove the suspect to an ATM on Summer Avenue.

The victim became suspicious and started asking questions. That's when the suspect got out of the car and ran off.

Germantown resident Kim Rayder says she might have fallen for the use too.

"I think it's not a good thing at all kind, of scary.  Actually, because I would be the one trying to help him," said Rayder.

It is not clear if the suspect really is a Marine. No one was injured. If you recognize the man, call police.
