Morgan Freeman's iconic Clarksdale restaurant to auction contents

Posted: Updated:

CLARKSDALE, MS - (WMC-TV) – For more than a decade the Madidi Restaurant has been a Clarksdale icon, a place for many stars and tourists on the Mississippi Blues Trail. Tuesday, folks can take home a piece.

For owners Morgan Freeman and Bill Luckett what's inside these doors is more than just a former restaurant.

"We think we did what we set out to do and that was to put this city back on the map," Freeman said.

In a town many consider to be the birthplace of blues, two of Clarksdale's biggest names started Madidi Restaurant and Ground Zero Blues Club to give tourists someplace to write home about.

"The more attractions you have in a town, the better off everybody gets to be," said Luckett.

"It was that warm fuzzy feeling when you did something great," Freeman said.

After more than a decade, the popular restaurant closed its doors in February with history still inside.

And on Tuesday the public will be able to take home pieces of a place that brought in stars.

From kitchen equipment, to dishes, even couches, all will be auctioned off Tuesday by Nick Clark who's taken calls from as far away as Los Angeles.

"It's certainly probably the most prestigious auction I've done," Clark said.

From Freeman's busy big screen schedule to Luckett's recent run at Governor, the two felt it was time to turn off the lights, but are proud to see so many more turned on across streets that were dark more than a decade ago.

"It's been a great ride, I hate that it's over, but it is," said Luckett.

"I think Clarksdale is on the map and we'll stay here," added Freeman.

The two will continue to operate Ground Zero Blues Club in Clarksdale. That auction starts at 9 o clock Tuesday morning.
