5-hour Energy investigated in 13 deaths

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - The FDA has reports of 13 deaths with a possible link to 5-hour Energy.

The popular caffeinated drink is seen and used everywhere.

It is a two ounce energy shot advertised to get adults through a sluggish afternoon. But the feds are looking into a possible link to more than a dozen deaths.

Living Essential, the distributor of 5-hour Energy, released a statement to the New York Times saying that it "takes reports of any potential adverse event tied to our product very seriously. We fully comply with all of our reporting requirements...as regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration."

The family of 27-year-old Antonio Hassell, of Memphis, filed a lawsuit against the company claiming the energy drink caused his sudden heart attack. It was voluntarily dismissed but could be re-filed at any time.

The inquiry spans four years and includes 33 hospitalizations and 13 deaths, according to the FDA.
