Lost and found pet advocate earns 'Piper Award'

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Mid-South woman dedicated to rescuing lost pets and returning them to their owners is being recognized for her efforts.

Teresa Martin does not get paid for what she does. She connects lost pets with their owners through her Facebook page called "Lost and Found Pets of the Mid-South".

"I monitor this page in addition to Craigslist, The Commercial Appeal, which is free online, the Memphis Flyer, which is free online, lost and found and fidofinder.com and I monitor all these pages," said Martin.

It takes her more than 40 hours each week, but in 20 months, the Holly Springs mother has reunited more than 2,000 lost pets to their owners. That averages to be about 100 each month.

"Just because you lost your dog yesterday, your dog will not turn up at the shelter tomorrow. He might be out for two weeks and then gets picked up," she said. "The first place to post is on Craigslist in the ‘lost and found' section in the community category on Craigslist."

Her hard work got the attention of the humane society and Greenway Home Services, which is also known for rescuing lost pets.

You may recall the kitten that got stuck in a pipe back in June. A Greenway plumber was on the scene until the early morning hours helping to rescue the kitten, which ended up being named Piper.

The folks at Greenway Home Services created "The Piper Award", completely with a plaque for the winner. Greenway then writes a check for $250 and donates it to the humane society in the winner's name.

Teresa Martin is that winner.

"We've partnered with Teresa. We use her as our lost and found expert," said Alexis Amorose, Humane Society of Memphis & Shelby County. "We send every animal that comes to us, whether it be lost or intake at our facility, we let her know and her success rate is unmatched."

For Teresa, she is on a mission every day, dedicated to helping stranded and lost pets all across the Mid-South.
