New road in Millington could impact economy

MILLINGTON, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Leaders in Millington are hoping a small stretch of road will have a large impact on the economy.

A six mile stretch of road, surrounded by 2,000 acres of land, was donated to Millington by the U.S. Navy.

Millington leaders say this land has a lot of potential.

Charles Gulotta, with the Millington Area Chamber of Commerce, gets excited every time he gets in his car to go to work. Especially when he thinks about the economic impact this stretch of road could have on the local economy.

"It's a huge economic development catalyst and incentive not only for Millington and Shelby County but also all of West Tennessee," said Charles Gulotta, Millington Area Chamber of Commerce.

It is called Veterans Parkway and it stretches from Raleigh-Millington Road, across Navy Road, and on to Highway 51.

"Not only do we have a roadway in place but we have water and sewer lines in place," said Gulotta.

It is not necessarily the road, but the roughly 2,000 acres surrounding the road that Millington leaders hope will bring in new jobs and new money.

The land adjoining the road is up for sale and it is ready for development.

The now vacant property is accessible to Highway 385, Highway 51, the Canadian National Railroad, and Millington's Regional Airport, which serves as a backup airport for FedEx.

Millington's airport has the third longest runway in Tennessee. And with the opening of Veterans Parkway, there is hope that more airline-related jobs will come to the area as well as commercial airlines flying in and out of the Millington airport.

"It is prime real estate and since the road is here, I can see new buildings coming up in the next few years," said Karl Bond, Swift Transport.

Charles Gulotta says he cannot comment on exactly who's looking at the property.

"We have industrial prospects, attorneys, corporate real estate people looking very, very closely at this," said Gulotta.

Veterans Parkway officially opened this past Tuesday, but crews are still there striping the roadway. The section of road between Navy Road and Raleigh-Millington Road is completely finished.
