(WMC-TV) - This Thanksgiving weekend I'm thinking of all those people who signed online petitions saying they want their states to secede from the United States.

Tennessee ranks fifth among all states in terms of the number of people who signed. Arkansas and Mississippi are not far behind.

Let's hope most of the petitioners added their names only tongue-in-cheek as a form of peaceful protest. On this Thanksgiving weekend, we should all be thankful to be citizens of the United States of America.

Images on television this week from the Middle East are a stark reminder of what we have to be thankful for. We're thankful for the for all of the military personnel and their families who keep us safe in the world and the law enforcement people who do the same closer to home.

We're thankful for parents who are raising their children to be our leaders of the future and for teachers who are educating them to insure our competitiveness in the world. And, we're thankful for the freedom we have here to disagree with each other and the government, and to speak our piece.

That's my turn. Now it's your turn. To comment on this segment or anything else, email yourturn@wmctv.com or call 800-465-1210.
