Horn Lake, MS -

(WMC-TV) - It will be a long road to recovery for Army Private Taylor Odom after a training accident at Fort Carson in Colorado left him severely injured.

Now, his mother, Jennifer Palazola-Herrin, hopes to have him home by Christmas.

"Right now he needs his family and friends so much, and the doctor told me there is no reason why he should be here. He should be home," said Palazola-Herrin.

According to the military, five Fort Carson soldiers from the third Brigade Combat Team, fourth Infantry Division were injured in a vehicle rollover accident while participating in a training exercise about 15 miles south of Fort Carson.

Odom, a 2012 graduate of Horn Lake High School, was one the soldiers injured.

"The soldiers and other convoys that saw the actual accident said his Humvee rolled for about 250 feet and crushed the right side if his body when it landed," said Palazola-Herrin.

After being hospitalized for several days Odom still suffers from a long list of injuries including brain damage.

"He was in a coma.  He has broken ribs and his pelvis is completely crushed," said Palazola-Herrin.

While Palazola-Herrin is worried her son may not be able to continue his career in the military, her number one priority now is getting him home.

"My hold-up is getting the army to get me an ambulance to transfer him, that's the only way he can get home," said Palazola-Herrin.

Odom graduated from basic training on Oct. 25 before transferring to Fort Carson.

He was scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan in February.
