Volunteers provide meals to needy Memphis families

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Thousands of Memphians do not have a home in which to spend this Thanksgiving Day.

Homelessness in Memphis is a glaring reality around the holidays. That is why dozens of volunteers spent their Thanksgiving giving back to the homeless community.

The Queen of Beale, Ruby Wilson, serenaded a crowd in Midtown Memphis Thanksgiving morning as volunteers participated in Memphis Gives, providing dozens of needy families something to be thankful for.

Forgotten Souls Ministries and Christian Fellowship Church provided a hot meal, coats, clothing, and toiletries to the homeless.

"We want to show them that we do have that love for them and their souls have not been forgotten," said organizer James Branch.

Many of us will never know what it is like to fit everything we own onto the handle bars of a bicycle.

Unfortunately, Memphis Councilman Edmund Ford Junior knows this represents a small fraction of Memphians living in poverty.

"I know in this city where you have over 30 percent poverty and a homeless rate in the thousands that reality exists," said Edmund Ford, Junior.

Ford also knows it is going to take more than pockets of volunteers and politicians to end hunger and homelessness in Memphis.

"It is and at the end of the day regardless of socio economic status, everybody is still human," said Ford, Jr.

That is something Christian Fellowship Church and Forgotten Souls ministries will never forget a long as there is a need.

"But you have about 100 individuals who said, ‘I'm going to get up. I'm going to make a change and if there are people in need, I'm going to go out and assist with that need,'" said Ford, Jr.
