(WMC-TV) - As you rest up from the rush of black Friday shopping, small businesses hope you'll show them a little love this weekend.
And take advantage of the benefits to shopping local.
"When you're shopping at the big box stores who is it really helping," said Hoot and Louise owner Anna Avant.
Avant is hoping shoppers will be asking themselves that question this weekend.
At Hoot Louise, a shop located in the South Main Historic District, Small Business Saturday has become a holiday tradition each Saturday after Thanksgiving.
"I think its great to bring awareness to the small businesses and to really just different areas around the city," said Avant.
American Express launched Small Business Saturday in 2010.
Last year more than 100 million people nationwide came together to shop small in their communities.
And there are long term benefits to shopping small, not just Saturday but year round.
Independently owned businesses are considered the backbone of any local community.
"We need to be doing everything in our government in our communities in our financial institutions to make sure we are supporting small businesses, the create the jobs in our local community," said Delta Regional Authority Chris Masingill.
American Express offers a $25 dollar credit to cardholders who register and shop at participating businesses.
But their campaign has sparked a "buy local" awareness even in stores not participating in their program.
You don't have to be an American Express cardholder to support small businesses.
But if you are you must register your card online to take advantage of the $25 dollar credit for shopping small Saturday.
