MCS closure list revealed, six schools at risk

Posted: Updated:
MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – We now have the list of schools that could either be closed for good - or transformed into something else. But before any of them shut their doors for good, you will have a chance to be heard.

A letter by Superintendents Kriner Cash and John Aitken reveals six schools are up for closure. Humes, Coro Lake, White's Chapel, Orleans, Norris, and Gordon are all on the list. And five of the schools on the list are elementary schools. One is a middle school. At this time, there are no high schools up for closure.

Humes could be turned into an art school for middle and high school students.

Although the list is now down to six schools, the Transition Planning Commission (TPC) recommended the closure of  21 underutilized schools.

Speaking to concerned parents in south Memphis, Sara Lewis, school board member, says the reality in many neighborhoods cannot be ignored.

"You cannot have schools in communities where there are no children," Lewis said.

The six schools will officially be presented to the Unified School Board this Thursday for a vote. Superintendents Cash and Aitken say that vote will only start the process.

Before education leaders make any moves, studies will be done to measure the impact the closures will have on the community. Plus, you will have the chance to be heard at a series of public meetings that have not been scheduled yet.

Action News 5 will continue to monitor the situation, and provide updates as new information is made available.
