Giving Tuesday puts focus on those in need this holiday season

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - Black Friday, Cyber Monday… both are days centered on getting good deals and gifts.

Now, there is a new movement called Giving Tuesday that is putting the concerns of those in need ahead of holiday shopping.

Beginning at 6 a.m. Tuesday, volunteers from Catholic Charities lined up outside several Homewood Suites hotels to collect donations for those in need.

The efforts are all part of Giving Tuesday, which is a day volunteers around the country began teaming up to stage various donation drives.

The volunteers from say donations will go to the growing number of families who have asked for help from the charities annual Gifts For God's Children's Program.

"The need is just not larger but its changing for example we have so many more working poor where we have two parents working but they don't have enough money to even buy clothing for their children," said Therese Gustatis, Catholic Charities.

Organizers say the goal is to take the focus off of yourself and shopping this holiday season and put the focus on some people who really need help.

Volunteers say everything from bikes to shoes and cash are being collected.

"Sometimes you don't know the need until you get out there hands on and do it," said volunteer Angela Atkins.

Volunteers say events like Giving Tuesday will give you a whole new appreciation for what it means to give back.

"And then when the families find out they're are accepted, many of them just break down and cry because they've had such a hard time getting help these past few months," said Gustatis.
