Rise in babies born with drug addictions in TN

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) – There is a disturbing trend in Tennessee. A task force of state health officials says there is an alarming rise in the number of babies born addicted to drugs.

Infants, who are born addicted to drugs, suffer from neonatal abstinence syndrome. They often spend many days in the hospital as they go through the painful withdrawal process. And during this process, they experience seizures, tremors, fever and vomiting.

Now, state leaders are taking action by requiring hospitals to report babies born with the syndrome. In January, hospitals will have to start reporting the cases.
