(WMC-TV) - Changes are coming to school security when the new Unified School District kicks into gear.
Shelby County Sheriff's deputies will soon provide school security for the Unified School District now that the Shelby County Commission has given them the green light and the money to pay for it.
Shelby County Sheriff Bill Oldham will get $2 million so that he can hire 35 deputies.
"We're going to start the hiring process right after the first of the year. We're going to hire for the positions that we're going to replace in the schools as well as have more experienced officers in the schools come August of next year," explained Shelby County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Chip Washington.
Memphis Police Department resource officers will not be involved and will be out of the picture next fall.
"We're going to put 25 school resource officers in the schools and we're going to utilize another 10 positions in our detective unit to help investigate any crime that may occur on the campuses and handle traffic issues as well," said Washington.
Meanwhile, it is still undetermined if officers who currently provide security in other suburban municipalities will continue to provide their service.
It will take nearly six months to train new deputies once they are hired.
