(WMC-TV) – A man was shot after witnesses say he tried to steal children's coats from a business on Lamar Avenue.

Witnesses told police that a security guard at the Love's Truck Stop confronted a man who was trying to leave the store with three coats he did not pay for.

According to the witnesses, the man pulled out a knife when the security guard was trying to take him into custody. That is when the security guard pulled out a gun and shot the suspect in the leg.

The suspect, 32, was taken to The MED and is in stable condition. The security guard was not hurt.

W C Hampton, the man who was shot, is charged with aggravated assault and theft of property of $500 or less.
