Gun purchases, background checks rise in Miss.

OLIVE BRANCH, MS -

(WMC-TV) - A record number of background checks are being conducted in Mississippi this year. The reason? Gun sales are on the rise.

A record number of guns are flying off the shelves in the Magnolia State.

Last month, more than 30,000 guns were sold in Mississippi, according to the number of buyer-required background checks conducted by the FBI.

That is 21 percent more than November 2011 and nearly 3,000 more than the previous November record of more than 27,000 sets in 2008.

"Any gun sale we make, we have to perform background checks to make sure people are able to buy it legally. You have to be 18 years old and pass a government mandated background check assuring that they are not convicted felons," said Jeff Duncan, The Gun Exchange.

While Duncan says his sales are going up, November and December are traditionally better months for gun sales.

"Up about 40 percent. We sold a lot of assault rifles, semi-automatic weapons, anything with a high capacity magazine," he said. "Just mostly due to the hunting season and the holidays. You have a lot of people giving them as gifts or people want a new firearm for the hunting season."
