Security guard assaulted in downtown Memphis parking garage

MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) – Memphis Police are looking for a suspect that assaulted a late-night security guard and left her for dead.

It happened at 100 North Main. The front door is open. And down a hall is a door that leads to the parking garage where the security guard was attacked Thursday night.

"Pretty shocked," said tenant Gary Johnson. "I mean this is an old ragged building, but I've never known of any real trouble."

But there was trouble Thursday night at 10 o'clock in the attached parking garage at 100 North Main downtown just south of City Hall. The building is mainly filled with attorney offices.

A female security guard spends part of her shift like other guards in this area near the elevators and one of the doors that leads to the garage.

She had just gotten off her shift and was walking to her car on the second floor of the garage.

The security guard told police as she walked toward her car a man came up from behind, put a knife to her neck cutting her, grabbed her purse then slammed her head into the trunk of a car knocking her out.

She came to about 30 minutes later and called 911.

"I hate to hear that. I hate to hear that. I really do," said Greg Shaw.

Shaw and his wife who has a studio in the building had just seen the woman two hours before the attack.

"She passed us down here," he said.

Shaw says he warned on Monday about a man lurking around.

"There was a guy hanging around here at the gate, and I went up and told her somebody should check on it. It appeared he was trying to get in," Shaw said.

The building's parking garage is gated and closed at 7 at night, but anyone can walk in the front door.

I went to the building management officer and asked if any changes were planned. I was told nothing is planned.

The security guard is expected to recover. Police have no suspects at this time.
