MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Detectives are investigating a murder that happened at a park in Whitehaven.

Police were called to the Polly Williams Park at Auburn Road and Craft Road just before 8:30 a.m. Monday.

When officers arrived, they found the victim inside a car, dead from a gunshot wound.

Neighbors in the area were shocked by the news.

Polly Carter and Larry Tharps have lived in the neighborhood for 18 years. They walk and jog every day. But Monday was the first time they have encountered anything like this.

"It was a lot. They had the whole lot covered," Carter said about all of the police cars and detectives on the scene. "I really hate it. Kinda shook me up, like, wow."

The park's most frequent visitors say the parking lot often fills with large, suspicious gatherings.

"A lot of people. They park down there in that corner or they park over here and they don't ever get out," said Carter.

Carter and Tharps say their routine will remain intact, but they will keep walking this trails with an extra edge of awareness.

Police have not made any arrests in the murder yet.
