Students mourn classmate shot to death

BLYTHEVILLE, AR -

(WMC-TV) - It has been almost one week since the shooting death of a Blytheville, Arkansas high school student.

Sophomore Miguel Estrada was shot and killed near the school last week as he walked home.

There are still some unanswered questions in the investigation.

All is quiet on campus but Blytheville High School student body remains shell shocked.

"We just allow them to talk, what bothers them the most, they can't seem to believe that it's happened," said Kimberly Dean-Files, guidance counselor.

A 16-year-old from another school is charged with the murder.

Blytheville high school leaders are working to help students cope while trying to prevent any copy cat or revenge crime.

"Appreciate the whole community effort and understanding that this happened out in the community, but of course, our kids are part of the community so we have to be there to help them," said Dean-Files.

The school district has an ongoing partnership with faith-based groups and others who can assist when needed but right now peace and closure are top of mind.

"They are going to have a memorial service. The kids wanted to get together and do this for his family, which they're going to do later on in the week," added Dean-Files.
