MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - News of a fatal police shooting still reverberated in the area around 1062 Mendenhall Cove hours after shots rang out.

"It's just very tragic for something like this to happen in our little neighborhood," said neighbor Rebecca Lundy.

Lundy was especially upset to learn fallen officer Martoiya Lang left behind four children, including a two year-old.

"Right here at Christmas," said Lundy.  "Children don't have a mother now at Christmas," she added.  "It just breaks my heart."

Police say Lang and another 32 year-old officer, William Vrooman, were shot by a 21 year-old suspect while a team of officers from the Organized Crime Unit attempted to serve a drug warrant.

Vrooman was injured, as was the suspected gunman, during a shoot-out in a hallway.  All three were taken to The MED.  That's where Lang was pronounced dead.

"Imagine officer Lang waking up this morning, kissing her children, putting on her uniform, then getting suited up to serve a search warrant not knowing what's on the other side of that door," said MPD Director Toney Armstrong.  "Now we know the outcome of that," he added.

Director told us officers are always prepared for the worst during what are known as high-risk entries.

"This is something we face on a day to day basis," said Armstrong.

In this case, a 9mm pistol with a high-capacity magazine greeted officers.  Martoiya Lang was killed despite the fact that she wore body armor.

Police won't release the names of the suspected gunman and another man arrested on the scene until charges are filed.
