CLARKSDALE, MS -

(WMC-TV) – Investigators were at the home of Ethel Lewis Monday, working to learn more about the 80-year-old woman's murder.

Red flowers and yellow crime scene tape surround her home. Lewis was found dead in her home, her body on fire.

Clarksdale police say her car was stolen by the 17-year-old man accused of robbing and killing her.

It happened in broad daylight on Saturday.

"It hurts and I can't imagine, God bless her family," said Lewis' neighbor, Ken Murphey. "Left my door opened, unlocked, my wife was at home. You just never think that this is going to happen in your neighborhood."

The teenage suspect was caught after a tip came into the Clarksdale Police Department that the 17-year-old was on his way south with her stolen car. He was caught about 45 minutes away in Ruleville.

This is the second attack on an elderly Clarksdale resident in the past few months.

Shirley Gordon, 77, was beaten with a piece of concrete after a 14-year-old reportedly tried to steal her car.

"Some of the neighborhoods that these kids grow up in, they are exposed to shootings and to older gang members that live in that area," said Captain Robbie Linley, Clarksdale Police Department.

Clarksdale police officers are working with local, state, and federal agencies in an effort to curb violence.

"Parents have got to hold their children responsible for what's going on, they need to know their whereabouts, they need to do a better job," said Murphey.

The teenager accused in Ethel Lewis' murder is scheduled to go before a judge to have his bond set.
