MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Friends and family of Officer Martoiya Lang are trying to come to terms with her death, although for some, it is still hard to believe she is gone.

Ajia Johnson's sister is good friends with Lang's children. She says the girls, ages 14, 13, 12, and 2-years-old, are having a hard time without their mother.

Johnson still cannot believe that Lang is gone, in fact, she still talks about her in the present tense.

"To know that I just saw her, and she lives up the street and we're doing this for her and she's not out here helping, it's not even real," said Johnson.

She knows Lang's four girls mostly through school activities.

"The girls, they're in sports. They're in track, they're in cheer. They are very school-oriented," said Johnson.

She says Lang was extremely involved with her children.

"She and my mom would always work to make sure the kids would have ways from practice," said Johnson. She also said the news hit her like a ton of bricks.

"The day it happened, I had to go out and get my sister. It was a really bad time. We didn't see it coming," she explained.

Johnson spent Monday at the Memphis Police Association fundraiser, "We're just trying to do all we can to help them out."

In between, the gravity of the situation hit home for Johnson as the tears flowed.

Lang's family tells Action News 5 it is hard enough for the children to cope, but the 2-year-old keeps asking for her mother and cannot understand why she has not seen her.
