COVINGTON, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A Covington man is behind bars, charged with the murder of a popular Ripley Tennessee store clerk.

Investigators say Kevin Grandberry just got out of prison in September and less than two months later, investigators say he committed first degree murder.

Police hope he will stay locked up for a long time.

"I'm glad they got the guy behind bars, glad of that," said Ripley resident Joe Nathan Taylor.

Grandberry was arrested Friday.

Police say he shot and killed Ripley store clerk Deepal Patel in November.

The warrant says he took the cash drawer from inside and covered his face with a cloth during the robbery.

"It is disappointing that the Department of Corrections really didn't correct Mr. Grandberry and we are going to pursue justice in this case just like we do in every other case," added District Attorney Mike Dunavant.

Dunavant says Grandberry also has an extensive criminal history in Dyer, Tipton, Fayette, and Hardeman counties.

Covington police actually stopped Kevin Grandberry several weeks ago because his music was too loud in his car.

Investigators say that traffic stop lead to his arrest thanks to a DNA match.

Joe Nathan Taylor's cousin, Raymond Theus, was killed less than one month before Patel.

That case is still unsolved.

Taylor says he's glad an arrest has been made in this case. He hopes to see justice for his family soon.

Kevin Grandberry's preliminary hearing is set for January 25.

The district attorney says he is looking at pursuing the death penalty in this case.
