District attorney weighs in on dangerous apartment complex

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – A debate is brewing about what should happen to the apartment complex where a 2-year-old girl was shot Wednesday morning.

A few years ago, the Warren Apartments were given a second chance to keep its residents safe. But that did not happen.

Now, District Attorney Amy Weirich is weighing in.

A wild shootout at the apartment complex sent a 2-year-old to Le Bonheur Children's Hospital after she was struck by a stray bullet as she watched cartoons.

After the shooting, residents told Action News 5 that they have had enough.

Plagued with gun violence and gang activity for nearly 10 years, the South Memphis apartment complex was dubbed a public nuisance by the district attorney's office in 2010.

District Attorney Amy Weirich says new property owners took over and vowed to make improvements.

Action News 5 went to the complex to ask about those so-called changes.

The woman in the leasing office declined to speak with us and slammed a door to our camera.

"The public needs to know how seriously our office takes gunfire where an innocent victim is caught in it," said DA Weirich.

Weirich says her next step involves working with the community and Memphis police to make arrests.

Weirich described what the next steps will be after making arrests, "My office will begin the process of looking into exactly what we can do to make sure residents at this apartment complex are safe."

Police have not yet released information regarding suspects in Wednesday's shooting.

Weirich says it is important for residents to keep coming forward with their concerns as she continues to make her case concerning their safety.
