Video of red light close calls, collisions assembled as warning to drivers

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Thousands of people in the city of Memphis run red lights each year. Shocking new video shows just how dangerous the decision to run on red can be.

You have probably seen someone do it. Or maybe you've run on red yourself. But now, American Traffic Solutions, the vendor that installed red light cameras in Memphis, assembled a hair-raising video of red light runners from the past year.

The cameras were installed in Memphis three years ago. But the video is compiled of people breaking the law in 2012. The cameras caught quite a few close calls and some full-on collisions.

The Memphis City Council members who pushed for the cameras say they are working.

City Councilman Myron Lowery began asking for the cameras nearly a decade ago, for two reasons: Fine collections pay for the cost of the cameras, and Memphis police have been able to use the cameras to solve crimes.

"In the last three years, the Memphis Police Department has used these cameras more than 50 times to solve other crimes such as rape, burglaries, and homicide," said Lowery.

Lowery wants to upgrade the camera software to track speeders, but his proposal failed in council this year.

In the meantime he says the red light cameras are changing behavior in our city.

"Ninety percent of the people who have received citations for running red lights never receive another one," said Lowery.

And the company that installed the cameras hopes this video will serve as a reminder to stop on red.

Statistics also show the cameras are working. Since the program started Memphis violations have decreased overall by nearly 30 percent.
