MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – It's a place that's been at the center of controversy for several years.

Club Hughes sits off Thomas Avenue in North Memphis, and early Sunday morning, two men in their 20's told Memphis Police they were shot and then ran out the rear of the building.

Both ended up at the MED, one in critical condition.

A quick search of archives here at Action News 5, reveals a history between the club and law enforcement.

We spoke with former Shelby County District Attorney Bill Gibbons in 2009, when he shut the club down, who called it a public nuisance following several crimes in and around the venue.

"In terms of the club, we think those days should be over," Gibbons said.

Owner Roy Hughes talked to our crews late Sunday and denied a shooting at his establishments.

"Didn't have anything happen, we had a good night," Hughes stated.  "Some of the neighbors said they heard a couple of shots on Life Street, but just because they mention or use my name as a landmark it automatically say it happen here, it didn't," he added.

In response to Sunday's reported shooting, Hughes showed our crew a locked gate near the club's exit and questions the stories victims gave to police.

"They go to The Med and lie all the time with gunshot wounds.  If they got shot some part of a place where they don't want police detectives to know, they'll say they got shot somewhere else just to get treated," Hughes explained.

While police continue to investigate what happened, we uncovered that Memphis Police have responded to 41 incidents at Club Hughes so far this year, along with 4 aggravated assaults, 13 simple assaults, 5 domestic violence simple assaults, 3 weapons law violations, and various drug and theft crimes.

No arrests have been made in connection with this shooting.  If you know anything, call Memphis Crime Stoppers, that number (901) 528-CASH.
