MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC-TV) – As meteorologists predict snow in parts of the Action News 5 viewing area, Mid-Southerners are preparing for the possibility of winter weather.
"I had to come get food for the house. Stock up on things we didn't have," said Phyllis Harris.
While people stockpile groceries, city officials are ready to treat the roads in the case of slick conditions.
"What we're preparing for right now would be some accumulation of snow, not freezing rain," said Dwan Gilliom, City of Memphis Public Works.
City of Memphis Public Works crews are on call over the holiday, ready with 1,500 tons of salt, 20,000 tons of sand, and a fleet of trucks.
"It doesn't matter if it's Christmas Eve or Christmas Day," said Gilliom. "We understand that we have a responsibility to the Memphis community. If we start receiving frozen precipitation we will have crews out on the street either spreading the salt brine or spreading the sand and salt mixture."
The city expects city streets to be perfectly passable without any pre-treatment, but should the snow show…
"I love snow. The children love snow. They get to get out and play in it. I think it's awesome," said Harris.
Some shoppers are ready, inadvertently prepared for holiday winter weather.
Emergency Management Agency Director Bob Nations said they are staying up-to-date with the forecast and are prepared for anything.
Action News 5 is keeping close tabs on the weather situation, too. Stay with WMC-TV and WMCTV.COM for the latest developments on the possibility of winter weather.
