(WMC-TV) - Dyer County Sergeant Heath Walker and 13-year-old Nolan Gregory have a lot in common. Both went to the same middle school, and both have a heart condition. Last week, they had a chance encounter that meant the different between life and death.

Last Tuesday, Nolan's heart stopped while at school. For the first time since then, he was reunited with the man who saved his life.

Tears flowed as Christi Gregory watched her son meet Sgt. Heath Walker.

"Because he was the one that first responded and saved his life," said Christi. "He never even knew he was there and it's a little overwhelming he gets to meet him."

Dyer County Sheriff Jeff Box had heightened law enforcement visibility in schools after the Sandy Hook Elementary tragedy.

"We had extra security in ever school in Dyer County that day," said Sheriff Box.

"I was actually on vacation and got called in to work extra security," said Sgt. Walker.

Sergeant Walker noticed a commotion, "I seen a bunch of kids running."

He had just had heart surgery himself and has a background as a paramedic.

Sgt. Walker performed CPR and the school had a defibrillator to jumpstart Nolan's heart.

"The nurse, the principal, everybody just fell right in line," he explained.

He says perhaps his whole life prepared him for that moment.

"He put us all in the right place at the right time. There is no doubt," said Walker.

"God was definitely with him," Christi agreed.

Nolan, a teen of few words, said the reunion was moving.

"Thank you," he said.

"I think we've all had the best Christmas gift we all could get this year," said Sheriff Box.
