SOUTHAVEN, MS - (WMC-TV) – With the threat of winter weather for the next few days, crews are on standby to make sure you get there safely.
As last minute shoppers head home to wrap gifts before Christmas, many hope they'll open them in the morning to a white Christmas. But it looks like any snow will be a day late.
Some accumulation is possible in Memphis on Wednesday and city Public Works Director Dwan Gilliom says crews are on standby, prepared for the worst.
"What we're preparing for right now would be some accumulation of snow to freezing rain," Gilliom said.
Salt and sand trucks will be ready if snow or rain starts freezing up on the heavily traveled roadways this holiday week. The same holds true for DeSoto County.
"There's a good potential for some ice and some freezing rain on the bridges especially," said Bobby Storey, Director of DeSoto County Emergency Services.
Action News 5's weather team says freezing roadways and downed trees are unlikely this far south, but it's very possible in Jonesboro, Arkansas where the town could see several inches of snow. 80 linemen in Craighead County are ready to make quick repairs after Christmas.
"If we have a large bad storm, kind of like we did in 2009, we've got access to other materials and workers and stuff if we need those," Monty Williams with Craighead County Electric said.
Action News 5 will have your winter weather coverage on your Christmas morning beginning at 4:30 am.
And don't forget, if you get a new phone or iPad for Christmas, you can download the Action News 5 Storm Track app for the latest radar and alerts.
