Teen mom gets new start thanks to community generosity

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - A third generation teenage mom is turning over a new leaf before the New Year. But she did not do it alone.

Princess Gibbs, 19, received a special gift that symbolizes the true meaning of the holiday season.

Community leaders got together to help Gibbs and her 3-year-old son, Travis, start a new life and get on the right track.

Reverend LaSimba Gray and Tennessee Representative Antonio Parkinson gave Gibbs a truckload of furniture.

Rep. Parkinson feels personally connected to the gift.

"You never know what small thing or small piece of help or assistance might actually light that spark in a person and get them on a whole different track in life," said Parkinson.

"It means a lot. It's a blessing from God and I'm thankful," said Gibbs.

Gibbs says her life has not been the same since she gave birth at age 16.

She shares some advice to teens she wishes she would have gotten from her own family, but never did.

"I just say swallow your pride and whatever is necessary to take care of your child, home and you…do it," she said. "If that's the situation and that's the road that you have to take to get things done, then do it."

Although Gibbs faces a tough road ahead, she starts school again in January. She has a tutor helping her prepare for the GED.
