Community donations will be split among Lang's children

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – The dynamic among surviving family members of Martoiya Lang is complicated, especially since the couple was in the middle of divorce proceedings. But advocates say regardless of all of that, the fallen officer's children need continued community support.

Memphis Police Association President Michael Williams met with Officer Lang's four daughters for about two hours on Thursday.

"The father, Darius Lang, brought them down," said Williams.

As a surviving parent, Darius Lang has legal custody of the children, even though his attorney says a maternal grandmother did not allow him to see them until Wednesday. It is also reported that she handed them over to him with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

"One of the things that they said to me was they wanted to give their father an opportunity and a chance to be a father," said Williams. "He's going to need support in taking care of these girls. Regardless of what anybody may think he is going to have to step forward and be a father."

Williams says the children are cognizant of and thankful for the outpouring of community support for their mother.

The Memphis Police Association played a crucial role in setting up an ongoing fund drive to benefit Officer Lang's children.

Tens of thousands of dollars were donated by generous Action News 5 viewers and others throughout the Mid-South.

Williams says the money is bound for a trust, untouchable by anyone but the girls and that includes family members.

"We're gonna split it up four ways and once they reach either the age of 18 or 21 they'll be able to get that money to have a starting life, to go to college, something that their mother would have assured that they would have had the ability to do," explained Williams.

There is a concert to benefit the children Friday night. Click here to read about the concert and how you can attend.
