Deadly officer-involved shooting outside McDonalds

MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) – James Smith watched as Memphis Police investigated a deadly officer involved shooting Thursday evening at a McDonalds on Frayser Boulevard.  It's where his brother was on the job.

"Everybody hollering, everybody screaming," said Smith after speaking with his brother on the phone.  "My brother on the inside got a gun to his head."

Police say two armed men entered the restaurant around 4:30 and confronted employees and customers.

Smith said his brother told him everyone's life was threatened as the suspects made demands.

"We want everything," said Smith.  "Money out of the cash register and everything."

One of several officers responding to the robbery call crashed his cruiser while trying to avoid a pedestrian.

"The officers arrived on the scene and were instructed by witnesses that there were two guys inside with guns," said MPD Col. Frank Garrett.  "The suspects ran out of a side door and the officers gave chase."

Witnesses said they heard multiple gun shots.  One of the suspects was dead when they ended.

"Suspect was shot once and is now deceased at this time," said Garrett.

The second suspect and possibly two accomplices in a Ford Taurus got away.  However, money taken during the robbery was found in a vacant lot by auto parts store employee Frances Freeman.

"I couldn't see what it was, was inside a bag, but I could see green," said Freeman.

An aerial search for the other suspects turned up nothing.  Now, police hope somebody turns them in.

It is unclear whether the suspect who was shot and killed fired his gun or simply pointed it at officers.  Call Crime-Stoppers at 901-528-CASH with any information.
