Free towing service provided in TN to keep drivers safe on New Year's Eve

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Perhaps you saw the number 1002 sometime on New Year's Eve.

That's how many people the state says died in traffic across Tennessee in 2012.

"Everybody be careful and whatever you do... Don't drink and drive," Memphis Police Department Lt. William Woodard.

More than a thousand killed during 2012 on Tennessee's roads.

"We've had too many highway deaths this year. We don't need anymore," said Woodard.

Police say they'd rather not ring in the new year with more of the old, the same goes for the American Automobile Association.

"The tow-to-go programs is a last resort program," said AAA spokesperson Cheryl Keating.

The motor club and leisure travel organization has again teamed up with Bud Light for the holiday season's tow-to-go initiative.

"If you find that you've lost your designated driver, you have no way home, you should not be driving, we would like for you to call us. We will take you and your car and one other person within a 10-mile radius to a safe place," said Keating.

It's free and it may get you or someone else home alive.

At the very least it may spare you a huge hassle...

Now that the no refusal law allows officers to get a warrant to draw your blood if they suspect you're driving under the influence.

"Just a small amount of alcohol can impair your driving...just think about what your employer or your mother is going to think if you go to jail for drinking and driving," said Woodard.

If you find you need the tow-to-go program, it's free even to non-members.

The number is 1-855-2-TOW-2-GO.
