MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) – Almost three weeks after Memphis police officer Martoiya Lang was killed in the line of duty, the man accused of shooting her appeared in court.

Treveno Campbell, 21, appeared in front of a judge in person Thursday morning.

According to police, Campbell opened fire on Lang and her fellow officer, William Vrooman, as they served a drug-related warrant at a home on Mendenhall Cove on December 14.

Campbell is being represented by veteran defense attorney William Massey.

"This is going to be a long, tough, hard fight," Massey told Action News 5 Thursday. "This isn't going to be over quickly."

He continued, "We have already had our investigator working so we're gathering information that will help us defend this case."

Shelby County's District Attorney General Amy Weirich is personally prosecuting the case.

"Jennifer Nichols that heads up our special victims unit and myself are the prosecutors that will make sure that justice is done," said Weirich.

Treveno Campbell will be back in court for a preliminary hearing on January 31.

The second suspect in the home at the time of the shooting is Willie Braddock. Police say he ran into a back bedroom as Campbell started shooting.

Braddock also appeared in court Thursday. He is being represented by Blake Ballin.

"He is connected to this case in a very minor way. He was found in a room where allegedly a controlled substance was found," said Ballin. "It remains to be seen whether they can connect to the shooting, the drugs or whether he was simply just in the house."

Braddock is expected back in court next week.
