Paperwork mix-up forces Iraq veteran, family to live in motel

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - A Mid-South Army veteran says he is falling on hard times as his family is about to get bigger.

Brian Whitehead got out of the Army in 2011 after seven years of service.

During his time, he served in Iraq and now, he is looking for work and a home for his family.

For the past three months, a small motel room at Millington's Magnolia Inn has been home to Brian Whitehead and his growing family.

"I've got two kids, a 13-year-old and a 7-year-old, a wife who's pregnant, due any day with a due date of January 12," Whitehead said.

Whitehead says he would like to move to a bigger place, but so far, he has not been able to.

He says he has been working with Veteran Affairs to get a housing voucher for a two bedroom apartment at the Millington Oaks Apartments on Navy Road.

"We had all our paperwork done in October. Now, all we're getting is, 'I don't know if they got the paperwork...I don't know if they sent it,'" he said.

Whitehead says he is not getting calls back from the Memphis Housing Authority or Millington Oaks Apartments.

"I think they just don't care. I think they're not doing their job like they're supposed to do," he said.

Whitehead says he is spending nearly $300 a week to stay in the motel.  And with his family getting bigger, he's worried about what to do next.

"We're sinking all our money in here. We can't afford anything for the baby. My kids are having trouble because they can't get a home cooked meal," Whitehead said.

Action News 5's calls to the Millington Oaks Apartments and the Memphis Housing Authority were not returned on Thursday.
