WEST MEMPHIS, AR -

(WMC-TV) - A sofa barely blocks the gaping hole in the front of a house on Stuart Avenue in West Memphis.  It's where Dan and Makietha Foster lived until last weekend.

"Actually we were sleeping and heard something that sounded like an explosion," said Makietha Foster.

"I thought the house was blowing up," said Dan Foster.

They said they were in the room when an SUV smashed into it after side-sweeping this big tree.

"And the next thing I know there was a truck inside the house and had us against the wall," said Dan Foster.

The force of the impact was so strong is shattered a window on the rear of the house.  The interior of what was the couple's living room is now in shambles.  Many of their belongings were swiped by looters who struck while they were in the hospital.

According to a police report, a man named Demond Dean was charged with DUI following the crash.  He was cited for being "impaired."  "Alcohol" is listed as a contributing factor.

Dean's girlfriend, who lives just down the street, told Action News 5 the SUV involved in the crash was hers.

"I feel sorry for them, and for myself also," said Mary Holley.  "I'm out of a vehicle," she added.

The Fosters have little sympathy for him but are thankful they walked away.

"I'm thanking God for life despite all this," said Makietha Foster.  "I thank God for living," she added.
