MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) - A new type of mass transit system is coming to Memphis.
Bus rapid transit service is less expensive than a light rail system, but not as slow as traditional buses. The Commercial Appeal reports the buses use global positional satellites, sensors for intersections and other high-tech electronics that will help the buses breeze through green lights along designated routes.
The bus rapid transit systems will be introduced by the Memphis Area Transit Authority this year along Poplar and Elvis Presley Boulevards.
MATA hopes introducing the service along its two busiest corridors will attract more riders. The agency is struggling to maintain users as budget problems have forced it to cut services.
