(WMC-TV) - A Memphis police officer accused of domestic violence faced a judge Monday for the first time since his arrest.

Officer Samuel Hearn, who has been with MPD for nearly three years, was arrested Friday morning following an incident with his 23-year-old girlfriend.

Hearn was wearing street clothes when he showed up at court to face arraignment.

According to investigators, Hearn was arrested at the Green Brook Apartments after a young woman told police their verbal altercation led a physical fight.

The woman told detectives that Hearn grabbed her by the throat and slammed her head into the ground.

"Right now he is relieved of duty pending the outcome of a criminal investigation," said Sergeant Karen Rudolph, Memphis Police Department public information officer.

Sergeant Rudolph says Hearn will stay off duty until his case is resolved in the courts.

She indicated that if the officer is found guilty domestic violence it could very likely affect his job.

"Well of course you have to look at your laws involving domestic violence," said Sgt. Rudolph. "If you are convicted of a domestic violence offense it becomes an issue as far as being able to carry a handgun and we'll have to look into it at the end of the investigation."

Depending on how the criminal case ends, Sergeant Rudolph says there could be an administrative hearing to see if Hearn's actions violated any police department policies.
