Mom: Daughter in trouble for hitting bully

Posted: Updated:

(WMC-TV) - A DeSoto County sophomore faces assault charges after hitting another student on the school bus.

Now, the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, or SCLC, is getting involved.

The Center Hill High School student has been suspended from the school bus for the rest of the year, but her mom says this case is not over.

Monica Jordan says she would rather drive her 16-year-old daughter to and from school if that means she stays safe.

"She was called n-----, monkey. The section where the black people sat was called the hood," Jordan said.

Jordan's daughter faces simple assault charges after she hit another student on the bus back in December.

Jordan says she told the school bus driver about her daughter being bullied but nothing was done.

"I don't condone fighting. But if you're pushed, what can you do?" she said.

Jordan says another female student had been bullying her daughter since last August.

She says her daughter was only retaliating.

"This far along, it's still not equal for everybody. Punishment isn't equal," said Jordan.

The SCLC attorneys are now stepping in.  They say the district needs to deal with the bigger issue of bullying.

"Parents this day and time should make sure they talk to the children about respecting one another," said Rev. Dwight Montgomery.

Monica Jordan wants the charge dropped.  She says her daughter is afraid to go to school.

The DeSoto County school system has a zero tolerance policy for bullying.

Officials there say Monica Jordan made no reports in person or online about her daughter being bullied.
