MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Memphis Mayor A C Wharton is taking his crusade to end gun violence to the nation's capital.

Mayor Wharton joined more than 800 mayors nationwide demanding Congress empower local leaders to stop gun violence.

As he works with Vice President Joe Biden on creating new bi-partisan policies, Wharton also joined a new campaign against illegal guns to localize the laws that will crack down on the problem in Memphis.

"The most asinine thing we can do is come up with a Republican gun plan or a Democratic gun plan, we're not going to get anywhere," said Wharton.

"Demand a plan" is the campaign of mayors and almost a million supporters urging Congress to take action.

"I know how much it hurts," said Roxanna Green. "My 9-year-old son was murdered in the Tucson shooting."

Roxanna Green is featured in the group's powerful public service announcement.

Her daughter Christina Taylor did not survive the shooting that injured former U.S. Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

"I have one question for political leaders," said Green in the video. "When will you find the courage to stand up to the gun lobby? Whose child has to die next?"

The group supports criminal background checks for every gun sold in America, a ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition magazines, and making gun trafficking a federal crime.

In the meantime, Mayor Wharton says he asked the state legislator to strengthen penalties for those who steal guns and use them to commit a crime.

The group is asking citizens to sign an online petition.
