MCS superintendent Cash announces resignation

MEMPHIS, TN - (WMC-TV) – Nearly a minute long round of applause followed Dr. Kriner Cash's announcement Thursday night.

"There always comes a time to move on," said Cash.  "This is it."

The Memphis City Schools superintendent is officially calling it quits after nearly five years and some six months after the unified board voted not to renew his contract.

"This has been the most precious and important opportunity in my career," said Cash.

Cash was hired June of 2008 from Miami.

"I thank the board that originally hired me," said Cash.

Cash's tenure has not been without criticism or scandal.  However, supporters on the board praised his reforms.

"Thank you for leaving with grace and dignity and just know you've left a footprint here in Memphis," said board member Stephanie Gatewood.

Cash will serve in an advisory role through July 31st.  He will then receive severance pay equal to six months of his regular salary plus $17,000 in moving expenses.

He gave no indication during Thursday's meeting of his future plans.

Superintendent John Aitken will lead the unified district pending a nationwide search.
