(WMC-TV) - A Memphis man accused of stabbing his estranged wife to death with a pocket knife appeared in court Friday.

It was an emotional day in the courtroom as the victim's mother saw her daughter's accused killer for the first time since the August murder.

Priscilla Taylor had to be walked out of the courtroom when her son-in-law, Travis Capshaw, walked in for his preliminary hearing.

Capshaw is accused of waiting for Ranita Burke to leave her office before stabbing her with a pocketknife.

Burke's mother said she was stabbed multiple times, at least one of those stab wounds was to the neck.

"That was the last thing he did before he ran like a coward," she said.

Capshaw's attorney says they are still waiting on evidence from the state, though they say he will plead 'not guilty'.

It could be 18 months before the case goes to trial.

The assistant prosecutor says the case against Capshaw will be a strong one.

Ranita Burke was a mother of four children, one of whom was fathered by Capshaw. The kids now live with Burke's mother.
