SCLC: MPD officers need more training

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - An organization in Memphis wants more training for the city's police officers.

The Southern Christian Leadership Conference says our men and women in blue are not as equipped as they should be.

Reverend Dwight Montgomery, president of the Memphis chapter of the SCLC, sent a letter to Memphis Mayor A C Wharton recommending police officers get more training. The letter was prompted after Officer Martoiya Lang was shot and killed last month serving on drug-related search warrant.

Reverend Montgomery says officers have come to him saying that more training is needed.

"There is always room for more training. I need to be trained more," said Montgomery. "So these are just suggestions and again they didn't come from my mind but from the recommendations of people who look to us to advocate in the best interests of the community."

Montgomery also recommends officers have better bullet proof vests and equipment.

Officer Lang was wearing a bullet proof vest when she was shot. The bullet entered from the side. Mayor Wharton's office said if the police department needs more money it is there.
