Panola County residents receive sandbags

Posted: Updated:
PANOLA COUNTY, MS -

(WMC-TV) - The Office of Emergency Management handed out sandbags to The Renaissance Self-Help Housing Subdivision residents after Sunday's heavy rains.

Floodwaters turned a row of backyards into a creek and converted the front lawns into a soupy, soggy mess.

As the waters swelled throughout the day Sunday, emergency responders showed up with sandbags.

This same subdivision was a washout in 2011, when residents said floodwaters destroyed their homes and put them out half a year.

That wasn't the case this time, because the sandbags from the Office of Emergency Management kept the waters out of their homes.

"We'd like to thank them because if it wasn't for them, water would be inside our house and we would probably have to get out," said Panola County resident Cheves Patterson.

Residents said the area is low-lying and they've had flooding problems for years.

Responders will keep a close eye on the area to make sure the flooding remains at bay.
