DeSoto County prepares for icy roads

DESOTO COUNTY, MS -

(WMC-TV) - One of the regions expected to be the hardest by winter weather is North Mississippi.

In addition to the bitter cold wild, it rained in DeSoto County Monday afternoon. All schools in DeSoto County dismissed two hours early as a precaution for what could lie ahead.

The county roads department has a fleet of trucks loaded up and ready to treat the streets as soon as it becomes necessary.

Emergency Management Association Director Bobby Story says they placed generators in pre-determined locations to be ahead of the game in case people lose power.

Emergency management officials are also preparing for the possibility for a tenth of an inch of ice on the roads.

"We know our worst areas," said DeSoto County Road Department Manager Andy Swims. "Our guys have been through this many times. They just know where to go and what to take care of first."

DeSoto County Sheriff Bill Rasco says his entire staff is on call should the roads begin to ice over. The road department works closely with and takes cues from the sheriff's office.

"Use common sense," said Sheriff Rasco. "Stay at home if you don't have to go somewhere."

Residents and drivers in DeSoto County are urged to use caution as the winter weather possibilities unfold.

The school system has not yet decided whether classes will be held in DeSoto County Tuesday.
