Nearly a dozen wrecks reported in Tate Co.

TATE COUNTY, MS -

(WMC-TV) - Tate County officials are reporting nearly a dozen wrecks on Interstate 55 and in Senatobia since the wintry weather moved in.

Since then, the Mississippi Department of Transportation has used salt and sand trucks to treat some of the roadways.

Officials have been warning drivers to slow down and others on the road are doing the same.

"Take your time, take it slow, and pay attention. Whatever you have to get to is going to be there, just take your time," said driver Mike Jones, Senatobia, MS.

There was ice on trucks, fences, and power lines. The winter storm threat sent a flurry of folks to Fred's in Senatobia, Mississippi.

Ann Turnage filled her buggy.

"I've got bread, sodas, eggs, and bologna. That's what everybody runs for when they hear it's coming."

In a word, she said this weather was "annoying."

"It wouldn't be bad if it would just snow, but it's yucky," she said. "Some places it's dry, some it's wet. My windshield wipers are frozen."

In addition to the roadways and power lines, Tate County's Emergency Management Association director is keeping a close watch on the radar and temperatures and the fire department is ready to spring into action.

"We open shelters for power outages, we check on people that need help, just a lot of inner workings that go on," said Senatobia Fire Department Chief Gary Copeland.

Action News 5 received a text from the EMA director here who said things basically turned out better than they expected. School in Senatobia tomorrow will start a couple of hours late at 10 am.
