City officials get first look inside Electrolux plant

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Construction of an Electrolux plant in Memphis is almost finished and the company's executives are revealing what it looks like inside.

The 750,000 square foot facility will eventually employ up to 1,200 new workers in the next three to five years.

Much of the assembly line machinery still has to be installed into the $266 million plant, but with plans to roll out the first products by May, the 90 employees already hired are eager for the work that lies ahead.

"It is great. It's good for the community," said Johnny Strickland, Electrolux press room supervisor. "People of Memphis, they need something like this. And this will be really, really great for Memphis."

The plant will hire 160 additional workers in late spring.

Electrolux was lured to move from Canada to Memphis by almost $190 million in local and state taxpayer subsidies and tax breaks.

Memphis Mayor A C Wharton believes it is taxpayer money well spent considering the ripple effects the plant will have on the city and Shelby County.

"That $6 million conveyor system that you see was purchased from a local company located right in the middle of the city, Integrated Solutions there on American Way," said Mayor Wharton. "So that's $6 million into our direct economy. And then there's still hundreds of other suppliers yet to come, who employ around 3.5 thousand individuals."

Lieutenant Governor and State Senate Speaker Ron Ramsey, Senator Mark Norris, Shelby County Mayor Mark Luttrell, as well as other local leaders and professionals also took part in the tour.
