"Power of Warmth" partnership needs heaters, blankets

MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC TV) - 170 needy seniors felt the "power of warmth" from a partnership that's ready to do it all over again.

MLGW and the Neighborhood Christian Center, 785 Jackson Ave., gave away 100 new space heaters and about 70 new blankets to Shelby County residents ages 60 and older or disabled without adequate heating.

"The central heating I have, it just doesn't keep me warm when the temperatures really drop," said 80-year-old Ruby Watkins of North Memphis. "If I could get a heater or a blanket, that would really help."

The center's employees gave away the donated heaters and blankets to eligible recipients between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Thursday in its "Power of Warmth" partnership with the utility.

"We have some left over," said the center's Kedra Jones. "It's just a matter of setting a new date and getting it out to the public, and we'll do it all over again."

To do it all over again, they'll need more new heaters and blankets. To donate, e-mail commrelations@mlgw.org.
