DESOTO COUNTY, MS -
(WMC-TV) - The gun debate is raging across the country and many are expressing their desire for more guns in schools. That may become a reality for at least one North Mississippi county.
The DeSoto County Sheriff's Department says there are several deputies in every school in the county and they want to keep it that way. They are asking for support from both the county schools and the DeSoto County Supervisors.
The deputies are inside schools as part of Sheriff Bill Rasco's safety plan that has been in place since the shootings in Newtown, Connecticut.
The school district says other resource officers have also been in schools in DeSoto's municipalities and the county.
But now the sheriff, county supervisors, and school leaders are looking at the cost of keeping deputies in place without draining the overtime budget.
They are still mulling over their options, but insist on working together to enhance the security on all campuses county wide.
Chief deputy Macon Moore said he believes the department has the money to keep deputies in the schools throughout the remainder of the year but that he would like to see that support from the county.
